Scott Pilgrim vs Ryan Larson’s Review | 08/30/2010

Ryan LarsonScott Pilgrim Vs. The World. The biggest financial flop of the summer is my newest review.

First off my apologies to my overseas friends for not being able to see this movie until later this fall.  I promise to not give away anything of the plot but I will be revealing some of the better aspects of the film.

Lets just jump right in. Scott Pilgrim has been a financial flop. It is considered the biggest let down of the summer and was seen by myself on opening day in the smallest theater in a multiplex. It was shown only on one screen with extremely limited times which was true with theaters throughout the country.

I HATE THE TREATMENT OF THIS FILM.

It was not given enough credit or even a chance. It was not allowed to succeed. It was set up for failure and that’s what it became. But it didn’t need to be that way. SPvs.W is a movie that works. It is a movie that amazes, nay; it is a movie that astonishes. I found while watching it that it became my favorite genres of entertainment in one entity. Comics, music, video games, all put into a movie. I warn you. This movie is for the nerd in us all.

Michael Cera plays Scott Pilgrim. A mid 20’s bass player for the garage band Sex Bob-omb (yes like the bob-ombs from Mario bros.). He is dating this highschooler (Knives) and falls for another girl (Ramona).  He ends things with Knives and starts seeing Ramona. He soon finds out that Ramona has 7 evil exes from her past that Scott now has to defeat. Why? We never find out but the action is so good it doesn’t matter. He fights them with a mix of comic and video game action and moves on throughout the film. He learns how to be a better person and in end finds what he truly wants from life.

Ok. That was a short synopsis but I didn’t want to give too much away. I am writing to protect those yet to enjoy it.

This film is targeted for audience that is extremely narrow. It’s risky because it doesn’t have mass appeal. But because it is so targeted, I enjoyed it immensely. Why? I am its target audience. Its mid-20’s people that grew up playing classic games and reading comics. It doesn’t apologize for being this. Instead it lashes out with everything it’s made of and says, “Here I am. Enjoy my in your face references to what you grew up on. Embrace your childhood yet again.” This movie does it all. It features battle styles you find on Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat complete with staging. It uses different music when the princess is introduced (I believe the music for that scene is straight from Zelda), 1-ups, unlocked weapons, coins, points, harder bosses as it goes on, and even a Scott Pilgrim mirror match. It witty, and has great dialogue and delivery. Visuals are fantastic and it has an amazing soundtrack. One downside is that it does contain some slow parts that seem to drag on. I found myself wanting the current scene to be over so we could move to the next. Also I wasn’t really sad to see it end. I thought it was long enough to do what it needed to do and be over. That was a bit disappointing to me. Inception made me yearn to see more. No such feelings with Scott Pilgrim. However, with those cons came more than enough pros to out weigh them. For Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’s creative uses of many elements, witty banter, over the top battle scenes, and straight rock-n-roll soundtrack, I give it a

  • Can't wait to see this! But, I have a feeling this is going to become one of those cult movies that folks watch later on.
