Inception (Ryan’s Review) | 07/25/2010

Ryan LarsonHello. I am Ryan, long time friend of Biaka and a fan of HD. I have been asked to start doing some reviews of random items. Whether it is books, music, movies or anything otherwise not stated, I shall do my best to pass on my opinion. I just want to state that I’m not foolish enough to think my opinion is the final word. I often find myself enjoying things that most people do not or disliking very liked things. I encourage you, however to try things a few times before passing on them completely. Without further ado, Ryan’s review of Christopher Nolan’s INCEPTION.

What can you say about Christopher Nolan? Relatively new to big screen flicks, Nolan’s big breakthrough movie was 2000’s Memento. Without giving anything away of Memento (if you haven’t seen it yet, be mad at yourself and go get it), it was a film that changed how I watched movies personally. Up until I had seen it, movies were a very clear black and white for me. Characters introduced, plot lines played out, ending. Christopher Nolan’s approach to film made me change most of those preconceived ideas and showed me how mind-blowing films can be. Nolan’s grasp of storytelling is impeccable. He is able to take a story and tell it in such a way that it becomes nothing less than a nail-biting experience from beginning to end placing you firmly on the edge of your seat, only to reach the end with a defining “you have got to be kidding me” moment. Nolan is best known for the newest Batman films. I believe that as amazing as those films were, Nolan’s best work comes from his original stories and the presentation he puts on to tell those stories. Nolan directed the Robin Williams and Al Pacino lead Insomnia in 2002 and 2006’s winning magician movie The Prestige starring an always-good Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, plus David Bowie playing weirdo scientist Nicola Tesla.

Inception begins with Leonardo DiCaprio washing up on a beach. As he is dragged into a palace to talk to an old man, they begin to talk of dreams from long ago. In typical Nolan fashion we then travel back in the story’s timeline and pick up the plot from the beginning. Cobb (DiCaprio), Arther (a stellar casted Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and a few other characters are currently infiltrating the dreams of a business-man. Cobb and associates are extractors, people who are hired to perform corporate espionage and steal ideas from their competitors. When the job goes south, they must perform one last job to be able to go home. Their task is to plant an idea, inception, in a rivals mind. Cobb explains that this is extremely hard but can be done. I shall stop here on the plot before I reveal too much.

Inception is a movie that I have been longing for. An original idea (discussed in my previous review) combined with jaw-dropping action and wirework. Movies rarely get this kind of attention anymore, its usually one or the other. You get a great story with horrible everything else, or great action movie with terrible storylines. Inception is the whole package. Cinematography was insane as well. There is a scene that involves zero-g action combined with a rotating set. Ridiculous! Another scene shows an entire city folding over on itself. Outrageous you say? I assure you its not. The dream world Nolan creates is just like the real world with only minor differences that are ruled by a set of standards that keep the dreamer from realizing what is happening. The dream worlds are amazing and beautiful without being all What Dreams May Come about it.

I could talk all day about this movie. Words like amazing, wonderful, brilliant, and fantastic would be used many many times. When describing it to people many arm gestures were used in excitement to describe scenes that caused those around to fear for safety… it really is that good.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception gets a hearty 5 faces out of 5 faces. GO SEE IT NOW!!!!
